As a Granada Television series, Band of Gold was seen by 15 million viewers. Set in a notorious red-light district of Bradford, it was inspired when Mellor and her husband were driving down the area's Lumb Lane when a girl of about 14 - the same age as their daughter - approached their car offering sex.

Mellor was so appalled and haunted by this that she wrote the series but it took eight years of persuasion before a television company would produce it. It tells how a young mother is drawn to prostitution.

The play has soap stars Gaynor Faye (Emmerdale) Laurie Brett (EastEnders) Kieron Richardson (Hollyoaks) and Shayne Ward (Coronation Street) with Andrew Dunn from Dinnerladies.

A world stage premiere. Shows 7.45pm with matinees Thursday and Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets £25-£45 from 01223 503333 or cambridgeartstheatre.com.
