As the January blues kick in, there could not be a more perfect time for a comedy club to launch in Great Dunmow.
Comedian Paddy Lennox, pictured, who regularly appears at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, came up with the idea for the new venture at the Arts Centre, in Haslers Lane,
The first gig is tomorrow night (Friday).
Be prepared for plenty of laughs as he will be joined by three of his comic friends – all willing to show the audience a good time.
Speaking ahead of the event the funny-man told the Broadcast: “Opening a comedy club is something every comic thinks about doing.
“I know what a small town wants and needs and I really think this could work in Dunmow.”
Being a father-of-three, Lennox wants to be able to travel less which is why he picked the town for this event.
The Bishop’s Stortford resident – also known as the dad from the Haribo Tangtastic advert – says he is incredibly nervous about the opening, despite already running two comedy clubs in Oxfordshire.
“I have never had insomnia in my life but now I am waking up every night worrying about everything that could go wrong,” added the Irishman.
“The other night I had to Google the possibility of Dunmow flooding!
“My biggest fear is that there could be an empty room month after month and then we will have to close.
“People need to come out and support this. If they want it here, they have to make it happen.”
On the first night Zoe Lyons, who has been on Mock The Week, Steve Bugeja, named BBC Radio New Comedy winner 2013, and Andrew Bird, described by The Scotsman as “comedy gold”, will all be performing.
From then on the club will open on the first Friday of each month and will feature some well-known comics as well as some up-and-coming performers.
According to Lennox, there will be something for everyone.
Tickets cost £10 for the first night and then £12.50.
Doors open at 8.30pm.
