LOVE and Summer is set in rural 1950s Ireland in the quiet fictional village of Rathmoye.
When a stranger moves into the area, Ellie, the second wife of Dillahan, a farmer struggling to come to terms with the death of his first wife and child, slowly starts to form an attachment to Ellie. Unfortunately this does not go unnoticed by the every watchful eyes of Miss Connulty who is torn between anger and concern for Ellie, stemming from her own harrowing experience.
William Trevor once again forces the reader to stay focused, to pay close attention to what is happening and to what his principal characters are thinking and produces another haunting tale of love and loss.
