It was not the best of weekends for High Roding as both the 1sts and 2nds went down to heavy defeats.

The 1sts entertained Goresbrook for the first time since their promotion from the First Division last season, and it was a fine day with sunshine and a pitch made for runs.

Roding won the toss and put Goresbrook in to bat, but this backfired when the opening pair started with a good partnership and the rest of the team added plenty of runs.

After reaching 149 at the drinks interval the Goresbrook players slung their bats and without some fine catches in the deep from Matt Hammond, and Mark Gallop would have pushed their total into the 300’s. They reached 297-8, which gave Roding a mountain to climb.

Ryan Palmer (2-67), Mark Gallop (2-50) and Jeff Clarke (2-64) were the wicket takers.

Roding never got to grips with the run chase and were all out for 154. Nick Dawson (28) and Simon Sargent (33) were the only batsmen to put on significant scores.

On Saturday Roding visit Great Baddow.

The 2nds suffered a similar fate going down to Theydon Bois.

Batting first Roding could only score 122, although Kevin Broyd 44, Sam South 31 and Andy Duke put on runs for Roding. Theydon had no trouble in knocking the runs off finishing on 124-1.

On Saturday the 2nds host Little Mundon at The Meadow.
