There probably has never been such a difference in the events attempted by Saffron Striders. It ranged from the 13 minutes that it took Carole Wigley to complete the 1.7 mile course of the Chariots of Fire, to the 111/2 hours of Andy Bryant's London Rat Race.

The Bracknell Forest ACE (adventure, challenge and endurance) Race saw Andy Bryant compete as part of the two man Team Ixion. Stages one and two saw both an 8km adventure run over a mystery course and a 16km adventure bike route.

The teams then had to navigate their way along a 'trail marker free' 10km challenge run before finishing with a tough 15km endurance bike race.

Team Ixion increased their membership to three for their entry into the London Rat Race.

For the London Rat Race think famous landmarks, big ropes, audacious navigation stages and some quirky checkpoint locations.

Andy was obviously adept at events such as the run, swim and bike ride. He was less experienced at certain of the challenges that they had to overcome like climbing, kayaking, parkour and abseiling off of the top of Twickenham Stadium.

Finishing 17th out of 179 teams in a time of 11 hours, 34 minutes and 43 seconds was a truly outstanding result.

Closer to home, Striders' Carole Wigley participated in the Chariots of Fire Relay Race in Cambridge. Her team finished in the impressive position of 109th out of 380.

She completed her own 1.7 mile stage in 13min 17sec.

Some 200 miles further north, Simon Hotchkiss competed in his first race of an injury plagued year. He lined up with 35,000 other runners for the 13.1 mile long Great North Run.

His 7703rd position in 1hr 53min 21sec was a fine reward for his hard training and was a 15 minute improvement on last year's time.

After her success in the Walden Tri, Saffron Striders' Kate Holden continued her venture into multi-discipline events in the

Bedford Sprint Triathlon.

She secured a tremendous third place in her class with an overall time of 1hr 30min 34sec, split between 7min 53sec 400m swim, 59min 08sec 25km cycle and 23min 23sec in the 5km run.

Potential new members of all abilities & ages are welcome to come along for a 61/2 mile evening run (short cuts are allowed).

Striders meet at 8pm at the Lord Butler Leisure Centre.
