Members at Gosfield Lake Golf Club and their guests have met on the first Friday in June for 25 years to compete in the Sir Henry Cotton Bursary Cup.

The bursary was initiated at the suggestion of Sir Henry Cotton, the three times Open Champion and designer of both courses at the Gosfield Club.

This year’s event raised more than £3,000 for the benefit of junior golfers and over the years the total funding has exceeded £75,000.

The four ball stableford team format with three players scoring on each hole attracted an entry of 24 teams and 96 competitors.

Only one point separated the winning teams with the Magallufians team of Richard Last, Alan Cansell, Gary Stolworthy and Paul Rutherford, with 117 points, overcoming the Laughing Cavaliers, Jack McAllister, Chris Green Judy Pryke and Richard Collins, who finished with 116 points.

The Gosfield Lake Golf Club team was three points further back in third place with Mike O’Shea, Ralph Rowe, Roger Bramwell and Mick Leggett. Only one point behind in fourth place were the Mad Dogs team of Chris Wilks-Wiffen, Malachy Shields, Tom Bowran and Rob Brudenell.

The best individual score for men was by Dale Argent with 42 points and the best individual score for Ladies was Judy Pryke with 35 points.

The presentation ceremony was carried out by club captain Geoff Powdrill, assisted by John Harkus and the event organisers, James and Carole Robinson, both past captains at Gosfield.

The Bursary Committee organised prizes on every hole that were donated or sponsored by members and companies associated with the club. A golf shirt that was signed at the PGA Championship by Henrik Stenson, Retief Goosen and Alejandro Canizares was raffled on the day.

Many Gosfield Juniors began their golf on Gosfield’s Meadows Course, an Essex Golf Union affiliated course designed for beginners to learn the game and obtain an official handicap within a friendly and competitive club atmosphere.

Junior Captain, Nathan Hope, thanked members for their generosity and participation in the event, the green keepers who maintain the course and the clubhouse staff.
