THE Dunmow Round Table took part in their first ever rugby tournament last week in the National Sevens at Harpenden Rugby Club.

They did well to qualify for the tournament, which attracted 32 sides from across the globe including national representatives from Italy, Germany, Kenya and the Pacific Islands.

After several tough games, including a defeat the eventual winners, the British Army, Dunmow finished third in their group to progress to the knock-out competition.

The games continued before Dunmow finally lost in the quarter-finals. A great game saw some astute kicking from Jon Shepherd and a breakaway try from captain Dan Albon and although Thomas Johnson – distant relative to rugby legend Martin Johnson – showed some fluid passing, Dunmow bowed out to superior opposition.

Captain and Round Table chairman, Dan Albon, said: “I was really pleased with our performances and special thanks must go to team physio Mike Dalton for keeping us refreshed and fit throughout the day.”
