A YOUNG rugby star from Lindsell helped his academy win the national college’s elite league.
George Menhinick, 18, a former back-row forward who now plays inside centre, was part of the Colne Rugby Academy side that beat second-placed Eastern College, from Norwich, 56-3 in the title showdown on April 29.
The win put aside the disappointment of losing 21–16 in the Essex under-18 cup final against Braintree, where Menhinick scored a try.
“It was great winning the league, especially because we felt short in the cup. I’m leaving now and it’s a good way to go,” said Menhinick.
“I want to get my coaching qualifications this summer and after that I really want to go travelling. It would be great to be able to coach in New Zealand for a while, and to spend a year so seeing the world.
“I love rugby and I do want to keep playing, but there are other things I want to get on with too. When I’m done travelling I’m hoping I can get into the Bishop’s Stortford team, but I might decide to go to university instead.
“I’m still young so I’ve got time to think about it.”
Menhinick’s aim for the summer is to become a level three qualified rugby coach and to also complete a personal training course.
Lynn Menhinick, his mum, said: “I am absolutely so proud of him. He has done incredibly well with his rugby through the years.”
