A YOUNG tennis ace has beaten some strong opponents to win gold in a county competition.

Schoolboy James Tee, from Widdington near Saffron Walden, won the Cambridgeshire mini red tennis grand slam final, held on Saturday October 27.

The sporty six-year-old, a pupil at Dame Bradbury's School in Saffron Walden, beat off some good players to win the 'eights and under' category at the tournament in Hills Road, Cambridge.

Father Dr Mike Tee said: "I rushed back from work to see James playing in the tournament. I was thrilled with the result. He is a good tennis player, but I've never seen him play as well as he did in this competition. He was a deserving winner.

"It is particularly impressive because this was a tournament for eight year olds and James is only six."

James was selected to play in the finals after competing in the 12 mini red tennis circuit tournaments between March and September. The eight players achieving the best results overall were invited to play in the grand-slam final.

After winning the final in two straight sets, Mr Tee said: "James was absolutely thrilled with his performance. He has worked hard for this and he hopes to go on and win more tournaments in the future."

To get to this level James trains three or four times a week and has individual coaching sessions as well as club training sessions. He is a member of Fulborn Tennis Club and also plays at Next Generation health and fitness club in Cambridge.
