COMPETITORS from Dunmow shone as brightly as the Sunday sun as they took part in the Leisure FM 8.5-mile and four-mile runs.

Organised by Leisure FM radio presenter and Grange Farm and Dunmow Runners (GFDR) men’s captain Howard Jardine, the race started at the Dutch Nursery in Coggeshall.

The 8.5-mile route followed tracks and footpaths along the River Blackwater and included parts of the Essex Way. For those wanting a shorter distance there was a four-mile option. Having completed the course and fought off swathes of summer wasps, runners were able to sit in the sunshine and enjoy tea and cakes.

The 8.5-mile route attracted 69 competitors, including 14 from GFDR. The winner was Roy Reed of Tiptree in 1hour 15secs. Fastest for GFDR was Dan Reynolds in 1hour 10min, followed by Jules Reeves and Ian Lawson in 1hour 13min and Kath Birks and Wendy Staines in 1hour 14min. Jackie Adams, Stuart Adams and John Hardy finished in 1hour 23min just ahead of Lee Prowse in 1hour 25min. Gavin Foster and Richard Percy took 1hour 33min followed by Katia Robertson in 1hour 34min, James Crysell in 1hour 35min and Steve Eason in 1hour 37min.
