A SOLITARY strike from Chris Fogg was not quite enough for Dunmow to overcome the United Churches of Chelmsford at the weekend.

Dunmow had not had a game for some seven weeks before Saturday’s fixture but fortunately for the home side, UCC had suffered a similar break.

It showed. The two teams struggled in adjusting to the playing on an extremely heavy pitch at the Recreation Ground.

The first half of the match was instantly forgettable, with UCC marginally the stronger side, but Dunmow fashioning the better chances.

Indeed, after 20 minutes a long ball from defence saw Will Green break free of the UCC defence and bare down one-on-one with the keeper.

Whist Green’s shot was on target, it was too close to the keeper who spread himself well to prevent the hosts going one-nil up.

The second half saw both teams begin to come to terms with the poor pitch and play some better football.

Dunmow were the first to make the opposition pay, winning a corner after 10 minutes. It was swung in to the back post by Green and the ball dropped in the six yard box for Fogg to collect.

With his back to goal, he turned and powered the ball into the opposite corner.

The advantage did not last long though. The home side’s inability to clear their lines saw returning keeper Boreham beaten in a scramble in the six yard box.

Dunmow had the chance to push for the win with 20 minutes remaining. And again a quality delivery from a corner saw the UCC team at sixes and sevens as centre back Chris Taylor nodded an excellent header narrowly over the bar.

In truth, with fitness levels no doubt lower after a long break both teams settled in to playing out a draw and there was some relief when the final whistle blew from both sides.

Next: Dunmow are away to top of the table Laindon Orient. Kick off 2pm.
