Canvey Island 4 Stansted 1

FORMER Island man Scott Forbes was given his marching orders for a needless headbutt as Stansted crashed out of the FA Cup on the Essex coast.

Nearly 300 flooded through the gates to watch the first qualifying round of the historic competition, but the Airportmen could not bolt their own defensive door as Danny Heale snuck in three times to claim a hat-trick.

Despite Heale opening the scoring on the half hour mark the visitors managed to hold their own against the Ryman League hosts, but after Forbes saw red only one team looked like surging into the next round.

The Stansted player-coach, who lists Canvey amongst the many clubs he has played at, clashed with Kevin Dobinson before being carded. Dobinson was also shown a yellow.

Minutes later a Leon Gordon goal was sandwiched by two more Heale strikes, but Stansted’s Tony White did notch a late consolation with an accurate effort into the bottom corner.

The financial rewards for Stansted will outweigh any real disappointment at board level. Chairman Terry Shoebridge will now able to use gate receipts and competition winnings, amounting to around 3,000, to pay off a number of overdue bills.
