NINE Great Dunmow Triathletes competed in the inaugural Challenge Henley on Thames at the weekend.

The 6.20am start was delayed slightly as organisers waited for the fog to lift over the River Thames. But after the swim, the bike course looped around Henley travelling through the Chilterns, then the run was fast and flat alongside the Thames.

Dunmow Tri Club chairman Phil Elms was the only club member entering the full distance as an individual competitor – he completed it in a personal best time of 13 hrs 13mins for the full 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km (a marathon distance) run.

Dunmow also entered two teams in the relay event. First team back was Wendy O’ Brien, Kirsten Jolly and Gary Worsdell who completed the course in 12hrs 35s, closely followed by Phil Curran, David Pearce and Dave Andrews.

Finally the organisers arranged a half distance event. Peter Fox Thornton finished in 5hrs 41mins and Shaun Woodley in 6hrs and 35mins.
