Mel Barlow-Graham, 41, and Andy Bourne, 55, overcame extreme heat and humidity to record creditable placings in their respective age groups.

Bourne was the first British athlete home when he finished sixth in the 55-59 age group for the standard distance triathlon, comprising of a 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run.

And Barlow-Graham, pictured right, was 18th and the third Brit in the 40-44 age group.

But Bourne saved the best for the aquathlon, a 2.5km run, a 1km swim and another 2.5km run, where he finished second.

He said, “The temperature on the run was 35 degrees with humidity levels of 85 per cent.

“It was brutal and we had a major job keeping our core body temperatures down.

“But we’re relishing racing in northern Europe next year when the Worlds are in Rotterdam.”
