A GROUP of four Dunmow athletes took part in the recent Ironman Switzerland in Zurich – Adam French, Matt Whale, Nic Lowry and Bruce White all completed this epic challenge in aid of the charity Brainwaves which supports children with epilepsy.
The race was based around a huge lake where the 3.8km swim was held; Adam commented that “getting into the Lake with 2,222 other competitors was a real fight to find space and clear water in order to swim”.
Within five minutes of exiting the water the guys where starting their 180km bike leg – whilst not especially hilly it did include the climbing of the iconic Heartbreak Hill, a short but steep hill which has thousands of spectators on the road to support the athletes.
Once back in Zurich the team had to complete the final section of the race – a mere 26.2-mile marathon.
Adam was the first team member home in an incredible 12hrs 30mins and 46secs, followed by Matt Whale in 12hrs 47mins, then Nic in 13hrs and 7mins, and finally Bruce White in 13hrs and 38mins.
