The Hospital Cup, an annual tennis tournament held at various clubs in the Uttlesford district throughout the summer, reached its conclusion on Saturday when the Grove Tennis Club in Saffron Walden held the finals day.

The tournament was initiated in the early 1940s to raise funds for the old Saffron Walden Hospital but nowadays the money raised is distributed to local charities.

Five closely fought finals were played with honours shared between the tennis clubs of Stansted, Henham and Grove.

The ladies singles was won by Monica Sutherland from Henham who beat Nikki Penderis from Stansted Tennis Club.

The mens singles was won by 17-year-old George Luther from Stansted defeating Adrian Brown from the host club.

The mens doubles was won by the Grove's Simon Beckwith and Peter Hunt beating Stansted's George Luther and Chris Hollis.

George was back again in the mixed doubles with Sandra Ayres (Stansted), but lost to last year's winners Martyn Taplin and Daphne Lunnon from Stansted.

The ladies doubles was another all Stansted affair with Sandra Ayres and Sue Sebley defeating Daphne Lunnon and Nikki Penderis.

A cheque for £400 was presented to Kate Barwood of the Saffron Walden and District Charitable Welfare Association and a tea and raffle raised a further £100.
