BARNSTON boss Leighton Williams had some good news during the week.

Before taking his team for another local derby against Coggeshall he picked up the manager of the month award for January alongside his assistant Dave Murnane.

It proved not to be a poisoned chalice though as third-placed Barnston continued a fantastic run of form which has helped them bag 30 points out of 36 in recent weeks.

Nil nil was probably a fair result over the 90 minutes as the strong winds stopped both teams from playing attractive football.

Williams said: “It was an awful match. With so much potentially resting on the result, the game was made into pretty much a farce due to the weather.

“Neither team could play football, and both halves were completely dominated by the team that had the wind in their favour.

“Both teams must be praised for the way they defended against the wind, as it takes a lot of concentration to defend for a whole 45 minute period without any real breaks.”

“Praise must go to the whole squad for this effort. Even if the weather had been perfect then this would have been a difficult game against a very good side, but bearing in mind the conditions, every player played their part.

“I was delighted with the 2nd half performance, as we are a team that normally leaks goals, so to keep a clean sheet when defending for 45 minutes was a great effort, and I am sure that at the end of the season we will look back and say that this was a good point to win.”

Next: This Saturday Barnston AFC host 6th placed West Clacton. Kick off is at 2.30pm.
