Heavy rain resulted in wet and muddy conditions for the 150 athletes taking part in the event, which started at Great Notley Country Park in Braintree and went back along the Flitch Way through Dunmow to Takeley.

The race was eventually won by Lyndon Cooper in a time of three hours two minutes and 27 seconds, with GFDR’s Ashwin Shah coming home in 20th place and breaking the four-hour barrier in 3:59.47.

Clubmate Karen Pickering was fourth female to finish in 4:11.50, with Naomi Moss also completing the course in 5:59.00.

A group of 10 GFDR members had been in action at the Witham five-mile road race on Boxing Day, while most others are set to return to action for a Mid-Essex XC League meeting at Rivenhall on Sunday.
