Alex Lynn climbed from ninth on the grid to return to the GP2 Series podium in Austria at the weekend.

The Dunmow racer had a miserable weekend in Monaco last time out failing to register any points after 11th and 13th placed finishes.

However, the DAMS driver was back challenging in race one at the Red Bull Ring coming third for his second podium place of the season.

“After the disappointment of Monaco, it was great to get back on the podium at the Austrian Grand Prix support round of the GP2 Series,” said the 21-year-old who won race two in Barcelona back in May.

“Not only that, but to do it from ninth on the grid, and set fastest lap, showed what fantastic pace my DAMS car has got.”

Lynn had a poor start losing four places before the first bend, but recovered those by the end of the first lap.

“Unfortunately I got a bad start, and I was about 13th into turn one,” he said.

“But I had a good first lap and got back up to ninth. Then I got my head down and started passing people who were on the same strategy as me.”

Belgium driver Stoffel Vandoorne of ART Grand Prix continued his dominance of the championship with a fourth race win of the season.

Russian Sergey Sirotkin took second for Rapax.

Third placed Lynn said: “That was really nice to get such a good result from where I started, and earning fastest lap was also very important for us as a confidence booster.”

Race two saw Lynn stall at the start and after being almost a lap behind the field he could only finish 21st, although he did register the fastest lap.

Lynn has seen enough from his displays and that of the team to be confident the good times are ahead. He added: “Once it all comes together and everything gels we’ll be winning on a regular basis.”

Lynn will drive a 25-year-old Williams FW13B at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend before the next GP2 race weekend at Silverstone (July 3-5).
