A brace from Adam Syrett helped Stansted get back to winning ways on Saturday.

The Airportmen have been going through a bad spell of late, but they put in a good performance to seal a comfortable victory over Beaumont Athletic in the Essex Senior League.

"We got a bit of luck on Saturday, which we haven't been getting recently," said manager Terry Spillane. "We didn't work any harder or play any different, things just went our way.

"It could have been five or six and I don't think they would have had too many complaints.

"Beaumont are one of the teams we have got to be beating if we want to get to our target of mid table so that was pleasing.

"It's felt like ages since our last league game so to get the three points was important and it moves us up the table

"It was a good confidence booster - we really needed that win."

Stansted started nervously on Saturday at Hargrave Park but gradually got on top and started to dominate their visitors.

Sam McCarthy and Greig Taylor both missed several good chances and it looked as though Stansted may be made to pay for missed opportunities.

However, they made the breakthrough their dominance deserved after 70 minutes.

A well-worked corner fell to Adam Syrett and although his initial shot was blocked by the keeper, he made no mistake with his second attempt.

Syrett doubled Stansted's advantage 10 minutes later when he side footed home Danny Dow's cross at the back post following good work by Paul Seymour.

He almost claimed his hat-trick minutes later, but somehow he scooped the ball over the bar from the goalline when it appeared easier to find the net.

However, it didn't matter as Stansted held on comfortably to take the victory.

- Stansted were defeated 5-3 in a thrilling League Cup Group D clash on Tuesday night.

The Airportmen were unable to qualify for the later stages anyway, but were 2-0 up at half-time at Hargrave Park, before mistakes allowed the visitors back into it.

"We were in control in the first half and it could have been four or five but we didn't take our chances and that came back to bite us on the bum," said Spillane.

Paul Seymour and Greig Taylor found the net in the first half, but the visitors pulled two back early in the second period.

Seymour got the Airportmen back in front with a great individual strike, but three goals from the visitors saw them take the victory.

- On Saturday the Airportmen visit Bowers & Pitsea in the league.

Stansted suffered a 14-1 defeat last season against the weekend's hosts and Spillane is confident that won't happen again.

"They are flying at the minute so they will be full of confidence, but I'm looking forward to going there and showing what we can do.

"We always have a tough game there and they will fancy their chances, but hopefully we can give them a surprise.

"We have been creating chances it's just a matter of putting them in the net. We can only play one way and we will go for the win."

Stansted will be without Michael Palmieri (back), Danny Dow (hamstring) and Adam Syrett (ankle), as well as Steve Brown and Paul Seymour who are away at a wedding.

Stansted visit Eton Manor in The Gorden Brasted Memorial Trophy on Wednesday.
