Graham Goodman is celebrating after winning Saffron Walden Golf Club's inaugural Order of Merit competition.

The event took place from March to October, rewarding golfers for consistency and improvement.

It was a forward-thinking initiative, which was devised to encourage golfers of all abilities to play in more competitions. It proved very successful in helping the scratch team win the CAGU Division One Scratch League.

Three of the top-placed players represented the club in the scratch league, with Goodman leading with 123 points. Steve Plumb was second with 83 points and Tom Duggan and David Wiseman were both joint third with 82 points.

Goodman, who has just been appointed as scratch team captain, has seen his handicap come down from five to two and his year included a number of sub-par rounds.

Graham said: "It is great to be part of a forward-thinking club where a lot of attention is focused on competitive golf.

"I feel it has benefited the club immensely having this type of competition, which rewards consistency throughout the season.

"Next year I have set the team a number of achievable goals, and these include defending the Scratch League and winning other prestigious county events.
