DUNMOW hockey star Chloe Rogers secured her second bronze medal in four weeks after helping England to a tight one-nil victory over their South African rivals.

The former Helena Romanes pupil put in a sturdy display throughout the commonwealth games tournament but will be disappointed after the ladies declared they were determined to come back with gold.

England were beaten by Australia at the semi-final stage by a solitary strike from Madonna Blyth after they had qualified with wins over Wales, Trinidad, Canada, and Malaysia.

Rogers, who plays club hockey for Leicester, played a full part in all of the matches and scored in a 4-1 victory over Canada. She also started for the third place match victory on Tuesday.

England won one-nil thanks to a strike from teenager Georgie Twigg, but their defence took the plaudits after keeping out the Africans who had nine penalty corners and countless attacks.

The bronze will sit nicely next to Rogers’s medal from the World Cup in Argentina at the end of November – but the 25-year-old wanted more.

Before travelling out to Delhi in India she told The Broadcast that she was looking forward to the championships and expected her team to go all the way after taking part in a rigorous training routine.

“As athletes we usually go to some crazy places and we just have to get on with performing on the hockey pitch and hopefully get a gold medal,” she said.

However the women failed to negotiate the hot weather and head coach Danny Kerry criticised organisers for a match schedule requiring players to play in the middle of the day.

He said: “To ask players to play very good hockey in 40 degrees heat and 85 per cent humidity is not good because quite frankly it’s dangerous and it doesn’t make for good hockey.”

Rogers said that the hockey venues were very good as was the team accommodation and she added that the crowds had been a little disappointing in the early stages of the tournament but picked up later on.

She will be heading home with the rest of the team after the closing ceremony this weekend.
