IT WAS a tough weekend for two triathletes from Dunmow as they took on an immense challenge in the sunny heat of southern Spain.

Phil Elms and Phil Curran from Dunmow Tri took on the Barcelona to Mareseme triathlon which stretches over what is know as ‘Iron distance’ with differing outcomes.

The race is a huge task just to complete. Starting out at 7.30am, athletes have to compete against 1000 other racers from all over Europe.

They then swim 3.8km in the Mediterranean Sea, battling against strong currents and waves, before embarking on a 180km bike ride in temperatures approaching 30 degrees.

If that was not enough, the race is then completed with a marathon measuring the standard 42.2km around the streets of Calella.

Unfortunately Curran became ill during the race and had to withdraw, however Elms finished the event in a personal best time of 13 hours and 51 minutes. He said it felt like a “brilliant achievement” and was “a fine way to round of a successful triathlon season”.
