Gosfield Lake Golf Club welcomed 112 players in 28 teams to compete for the trophy in the annual Community Golf Day.

For 20 years the golf day, organised by Barrie Schulz and the Gosfield Club, has been raising funds to benefit the local community.

Last year’s beneficiaries were: St John Ambulance, Essex Boys & Girls Clubs, Hedingham Junior Football Team, Haverhill Town Pastors, Gosfield Parish Council – Children’s Play Area, Gosfield Primary School, Haverhill Community Library, St Nicholas Hospice, Bury St Edmunds, Essex Dementia Care Charity, Braintree, Sense , Race for Life.

Many companies and individuals support the event and the raffle prizes are donated by the competing teams.

Many teams have supported the event for the entire period and swear that the weather has always been wonderful for golf.

This year was no exception and the sun shone despite rain and storms as close as three miles to the course.

The course was in excellent condition to host the 27 holes of golf and the winning teams well deserved their prizes.

With nearest the pin and longest drive on many holes there is always something to keep the competitors interested.

Team winners this year were the ‘Last Ones In’ with 131 points Cliff Wagdin, Ben Blackaby, Richard Mulley and Jack Rayner. In second place were the ‘Happy Hackers’ Bernie Laskowski, Wayne Hewson, Jake Letham and Nigel Chinnery on 129 points.

Only one point behind in third place were team ‘XL Drivers’ Tony Flin, Jon Flin, Dave Flin and Jeff Baker.

Five players came in with 41 points for the Individual Prize; the winner was Roger Byford with 41 points ACB, runner-up was Phil Joy with 41 ACB and Jake Letham in third place with 41 ACB.

The morning Texas Scramble Back Nine was won by the ‘Dyslexic Tourettes’ Jeremy Paterson, Roger Bramwell, Mike O’Shea and Paul Knight with the Front Nine being won by ‘Quadriga 4’ Shane Wild, Nigel Clark, Dave Heather and Kevin Payne.

After dinner the prize giving ceremony was hosted by Barrie Schulz with the assistance of the club captain Geoff Powdrill and the Lady captain Georgina Penketh.
