Barnston AFC defeated Newmarket Town Reserves 3-0 in a friendly on Saturday.

The young Barnston team started with the oldest player on show aged 25.

The first 15 minutes were reasonably close with both teams struggling to keep the ball.

It was Barnston though who managed to get their game going first with Frances dictating play from centre midfield.

Kieran Heap came close from a direct free-kick and Jake De’ath hit the post from a cross come shot.

First team debutant keeper Alex Blackman swept up very well and used the ball excellently when in possession.

With 10 minutes until half-time 16-year-old Jamie Coe was pushed in the box and the resulting penalty was fired home by Kieran Heap for a 1-0 lead at the break.

Manager Luke Nash made three changes at half-time bringing on experience and giving needed game time to Curtis Babat, Spencer and Kurtis Litman, all three joined the defensive line.

Barnston dominated down the slope for the second 45 minutes with the odd half chance been smothered by Blackman in goal.

Joe Jones headed home from a Barnston corner on 60 minutes keeping up his recorded of scoring in every game of pre-season.

Barnston got a well deserved third when Coe squared to another 16 year old in De’ath who fired low and hard, a well deserved goal for the youngster to wrap up the victory.

Following the triumph, manager Nash, said: “I was really pleased how we controlled the game, our fitness showed and there was only one winner after the first 30 minutes.

“We managed key minutes on the pitch for certain players and we played very well without last year’s top scorer and manager’s player of the year.

“The young players have made big noises so far and are in line to keep senior players out of the team when the season begins.”

Barnston kick-off their Essex & Suffolk Border League Premier Division campaign against the University of Essex on Saturday, August 15.
