There have been several articles, letters and reports in the local papers about a drive to attract younger members to form a new W.I. in Great Dunmow. Dunmow W.I. was formed on May 16, 1922, and despite several neighbouring W.I.s folding because of low numbers or lack of officers, Dunmow has thrived. Dunmow WI currently has 42 members ranging in age from late 30s to mid 80s. Although they occasionally sing Jerusalem and some members make very good jam, they are a lively group from all walks of life and welcome new members of all ages to join them. As well as interesting speakers covering all subjects - some quite risqué - they also arrange theatre outings, book clubs, walking groups, punting trips, cinema trips, visit open gardens and garden centres, mouth-watering trips to the Chocolate Lady and Christmas Shopping trips to Calais. They meet on the second Wednesday of the month in the Talberd Room at 7.45pm. For more details call Brenda Scraggs on 01371 874787, or Carolyn Trowman on 01371 859040.
