VOLUNTEERS are being urged to give up just one Saturday a year to tow Dunmow's carnival float.

Members of Dunmow's carnival committee have put out the appeal this week to enable them to make more appearances at other town carnivals throughout the year.

Dunmow carnival committee secretary, Linda Herring, said: "We are keen to attend carnivals throughout the area during the year, but are reliant on a driver with tow bar being available.

"Our aim is to have a group of volunteers, each prepared to give up just one Saturday a year to tow the float then the court would be able to accept more invitations."

Despite having a shortage of dedicated drivers, Dunmow's carnival court is continuing to go from strength to strength.

It bagged itself second place out of the 15 courts at the Coggeshall Carnival, last Saturday.

It was the third procession this year attended by members of the carnival court, queen 14-year-old Danielle Bussell of Stebbing and princesses 12-year-old Chloe Dews of Dunmow and 10-year-old Holly-Jane Webberley of Barnston.

A new trailer bought by the committee through fund-raising and donations for Dunmow Court was ready to use at Witham Carnival and the court came in at fourth place.

Despite the increased costs involved in running the event each year, the committee continues to raise further funds to cover the costs giving families a free fun day out.

Grand draw tickets boasting a £100 cash top prize are currently on sale from committee members, Willetts, Carpet Comfort and will also be on sale in the High Street on Saturday August 5.

All the proceeds will go directly to the carnival committee fund.

Anyone wanting to help the Dunmow carnival team should contact chairman Keith Wheatcroft on 01371 875300.

The committee thanked P&A Woods, which donated the use of a car and driver for the Braintree and Bocking procession last month.
