Uttlesford District Council has apologied for cancelling refuse collections

An apology has come from Uttlesford District Council for cancelling bin collections between Christmas and New Year.

The council says the collections were cancelled because of the snow. But extra vehicles will be used to finish the collection by the end of this week (January 6) and the service will return to normal next week (starting from January 8).

In a statement, the council said: “As many residents will be aware, the bin collection schedule has been severely disrupted following the adverse weather last week.

“Due to the snow and ice, collections on Wednesday and Thursday (December 27 and 28) were cancelled. The conditions were particularly dangerous for our 32-tonne refuse collection vehicles to operate in.

“This decision was not taken lightly, however the safety of the public and our refuse collection staff was the most important consideration.

To get collections back on track as quickly as possible, additional vehicles and crews are helping to clear the backlog. We anticipate that all collections will be completed by the end of the week, and that the service will return to normal from next week.”

A council spokesman said residents whose recycling bins have still not been collected should continue to leave these out and the refuse collectors will get to them as soon as possible. Extra recycling that does not fit into the bin can be put in any plastic bag (except black bin bags) or cardboard box and left out by the bins for collection.

The spokesman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and we thank residents for their patience and understanding during this time and for the positive responses we have had to the way in which we have communicated this through our social media channels. To stay up to date with all council information we would urge people to register for our regular e-newsletters via the Keep me posted service at www.uttlesford.gov.uk/keepmeposted, and to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (search UttlesfordDC).”
