PHONE lines at Uttlesford District Council have been buzzing all day with complaints over gypsies moving onto an unauthorised site in Little Hallingbury.

Over the weekend an unauthorised traveller's settlement was created in the village and local residents have been quick to bring the situation to the council's attention.

Following numerous complaints to its enforcement team a statement the council released the following statement on its website: "The council is aware that over the weekend an unauthorised traveller settlement was created in Little Hallingbury.

"As soon as the council became aware of this fact, high priority was attached to addressing the situation.

"The site is in the green belt, where there is a general presumption against inappropriate development. New gypsy and traveller sites in the green belt are normally inappropriate development.

"National planning policy on green belts applies equally to applications for planning permission from gypsies and travellers, and the settled population. No application has been made for a gypsy and traveller site on this land. Alternatives should be explored before green belt locations are considered.

"Following a site visit this morning, the council's enforcement team is currently identifying the most appropriate course of action. Residents can be assured that everything possible is being done to ensure the expedient control of this situation and that every available legal means will be used to find a solution.

"Until a solution is found, council officers will be closely monitoring developments at the site. Further updates will be released here as soon as they are available.
