THIS year's council chairman's charity project received a major boost today thanks to a 500 donation from Saffron Walden Ladies' Circle.

The cheque was gratefully received by Uttlesford District Council chairman Cllr Alastair Walters, who chose to concentrate his fundraising efforts on local charity Accuro during his year in office.

Cllr Walters' main focus is on the Accuro's 'Under-19 Project', which was established in 2000 to increase the previously limited leisure and social opportunities for young people with a disability in the Uttlesford area.

The scheme aims to develop their social skills, improve their self confidence, and to enable them to take more control over their lives. This is achieved through several means, including two weekly social clubs in Saffron Walden and Great Dunmow.

Cllr Walters received the cheque the cheque for 500 from members of the Saffron Walden Ladies' Circle at the district council's offices today.

He said: "I'm delighted with this very generous donation which will make a very welcome boost to my charity appeal.

"Saffron Walden Ladies' Circle does a great deal of fundraising work in the town and I am extremely grateful for this very marvellous contribution."

Circle member Claire Croft said: "This money was raised at a well-attended quiz we organised earlier this year, which was a big success.

"It's important to the Ladies' Circle that we're able to improve things for people in our own local community, so we are very pleased that the money we raised will do just that.

"The Ladies' Circle would love to meet some new members - membership is open to women aged between 18 and 45, and we normally get together on the third Thursday of each month.

"It's a great way to make new friends and have fun while giving something back to the community."
