A HORSE-CHESTNUT tree will be planted in memory of the man who instigated the twinning of Sawston and Selsingen, North Germany.

Klaus Bruno Pape, who died two years ago, will be remembered in a ceremony at 10.30am on Saturday January 21, in Orchard Park, Sawston.

Members of the Sawston-Selsingen Twinning Association and Sawston residents will be joined by Klaus' niece, Kiara Rostien, a student in Cambridge.

The horse-chestnut was chosen in recognition of Klaus' passion for planting the trees in his garden and a nearby wood, using conkers he collected during his visits to Sawston.

He first visited and fell in love with the village in 1984, then in 1986 he invited a group of Sawston Scouts to travel to Selsingen to start many exchange visits.

This led to formal twinning ceremonies in 1989 and 1990 and since then many Sawston residents have had the opportunity to experience the hospitality and friendship of their Selsingen counterparts.
