Travellers who set up an illegal camp on the Recreation Ground in Dunmow on Sunday (August 21) will be served with a ‘direction to leave’ notice by the council.

The travellers arrived at the playing fields just after 3pm and seven caravans are currently on the site along with other vehicles.

A spokeswoman for Dunmow Town Council, who own the land, said they were coordinating with Uttlesford District Council (UDC) regarding the encampment.

Councillor Simon Walsh, Essex County Council cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “Essex Countywide Traveller Unit officers attended this encampment today (Tuesday, August 23) on behalf of Uttlesford District Council.

“We will now begin legal proceedings to serve a ‘Direction to Leave’ notice, which will require that the travellers must leave the area in the coming days.”
