AFTER 11 years as Rector in Saffron Walden, the Rev Duncan Green is leaving the town to take up an exciting post connected to the London Olympics 2012.

Canon Green, who also spent four years as the founder and warden at St Mark's College at Audley End, said he was thrilled to be taking up the position of Church of England Olympics Executive Co-ordinator but sad to be leaving Saffron Walden.

"I'm very excited about the Olympic and Paralympic Games, but obviously have mixed feelings," he said.

"It's very hard to move; what makes it harder is the associations with people that I have in Saffron Walden.

"Having been rector here for 11 years, I have shared with people a lot of the intimate moments of their lives.

"I've made a lot of friends and have met many people who will remain close to my heart.

"However, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I'm delighted to have been offered the position."

Canon Green will perform his last service in Saffron Walden on October 21.
