£1700 worth of cigarettes was stolen from the co-op in Dunmow late on Sunday night.
The thieves forced open the sliding doors to the front entrance of the supermarket at around 11.30pm, causing £300 worth of damage.
Police are actively seeking any witnesses who might have been in the area at the time as the thieves must have been in the store a while to break open a secure shutter behind a counter and steal most of the goods.
