Distinguished historian and military expert Andrew Robertshaw discussed one of the world’s most famous battles at an annual event in Uttlesford.
The Time Team favourite, who specialises in the Great War, dropped by Felsted School to speak at The Cromwell Lecture.
He addressed the commonly held belief that the Battle of the Somme, fought in 1916, was ill-planned and a case of “lions led by donkeys”. Robertshaw offered up the alternative view that it can be seen as a turning point in the First World War.
Headmaster Dr Mike Walker said: “We were delighted to host Andy Robertshaw, who is a well-known military historian, to give The Cromwell Lecture.
“I am most grateful to Nichola Martin, our librarian, for arranging the lecture and we have been most privileged to have an historian of his standing here at Felsted.”
After the lecture Robertshaw held a question and answer session along with a book signing.
