It was Strictly Come Dancing fever at Great Dunmow Primary School when young dancers in year six took to the floor and wowed a packed audience with their own version of the BBC One programme.

The pupils had been preparing for the event for weeks and choreographed the routines themselves.

They first got into the swing of things after learning the waltz in a PE lesson and they caught the dancing bug from there.

On the night, two pupils stood in for Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman as the hosts, presenting their “Strictly stars.” They kept the audience entertained between performances.

Headteacher Kevin Watts said: “It was absolutely amazing. It was really fantastic to see that children who have low self-esteem or little confidence were willing to stand up in front of more than 180 people and perform routine they had choreographed themselves.

“The standard was brilliant, especially as they had no expert teaching. It was such a positive evening and everyone was supporting each other. There was a real sense of togetherness which is what this school is all about.”

The Strictly Come Dancing Final is on BBC One at 6.40pm on Saturday, December 17.
