A man who was arrested at Stansted Airport after breaking into another man's home, spraying ammonia in his face and then fleeing to Spain has had his sentence increased following an intervention from the attorney general.

The leader of a residents' group which dramatically ousted the Conservative administration in the May local elections at the Essex district which is home to Stansted airport has hit out at what he believes was a flawed decision to back plans for its expansion, but said it couldn't be overturned by the council now.

"I am thrilled, a little bit stunned," said Councillor John Lodge, leader of Residents for Uttlesford, which took overall control at the local elections, upping their seats from 11 to 26.

Conservative councillors have been swept away at Uttlesford District Council as voters turned to political party Residents for Uttlesford.

Polling stations across Uttlesford are now open and voters have today to cast their vote in the local elections.

Delaying the approval notice for Stansted Airport's planning permission to increase its passenger numbers could bankrupt the council, the leader of Uttlesford District Council (UDC) has claimed.

Employees at Stansted Airport have spent 7,000 hours volunteering in towns and villages around Uttlesford in the past 12 months.
