Have you ever got in from a cold day and fancied a bowl of lovely homemade soup but didn’t know where to start? Well, thanks to Walden In Transition (WiT), that could all change – the think-tank group, which is focused on sustainable living, has organised a soup-making lesson suitable for all ages.

Well, thanks to Walden In Transition (WiT), that could all change – the think-tank group, which is focused on sustainable living, has organised a soup-making lesson suitable for all ages.

Vyvyan Veal, chairman of WiT, explains: “The idea behind the lesson is simple: to get people to use locally produced, seasonal food and teach them how to make something delicious with it.”

The event is being sponsored by WiT and Walden Local Food, with the latter supplying the food that will be cooked.

Tom Jackson, owner of professional caterers Select Food, will be hosting the lesson, and will be giving a masterclass on how to make soup from ingredients and fresh bread.

“I’ll be teaching people how to make a simple, quick, nutritious soup from seasonal vegetables as well as a simple wholemeal bread roll to go with it,” said Mr Jackson.

“Many people don’t realise how easy it is to create something delicious within minutes, that is healthy and uses raw ingredients which are locally sourced.”

At the end of the day, everyone will have the opportunity to sit down and eat the food they have cooked.

The lesson will be suitable for people of all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult as the course will involve using sharp implements and hot pans.

The event will be held in The Friends Meeting House, on Saffron Walden High Street, on Saturday, December 7, from 10am to 1pm and.

There are 24 places available and it is strongly suggested that people wanting to attend should pre-book a place, although admission at the door will be allowed according to availability.

Places should be booked by calling Mr Jackson on 01736 838732.
