RAISING money for Children in Need was a piece of cake for two friends in Great Saling on Saturday.

Sophie Hughes and Maggie Cooper, both aged 11, raised £119 by holding a coffee morning where they served homemade cakes to people in the village hall. Visitors could also take the opportunity to have their cars washed while they were served refreshments.

The girls came up with the idea to raise money for the BBC charity after watching adverts for it on television and had originally planned to do a sponsored cycle ride but decided a coffee morning would be safer.

Sophie admitted that she and Maggie were nervous on the day. "We didn't know if anyone would turn up," she said. "It was such a relief when the first people came."

Among the homemade

treats the friends were selling were fairy cakes at 25p, cookies, flapjacks and shortbread for 20p each and cheesecake for £1.

"We were really excited when we added up the money at the end of the day," said Sophie. "We never thought we'd raise as much as we did. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to donate money and also to our families for helping us.
