Kemi Badenoch, MP for Saffron Walden, says she will be supporting Theresa May in Wednesday night’s vote on her leadership.
Mrs Badenoch said: “I am supporting the prime minister at this critical juncture in the future of our country. As someone who voted leave, this is the worst possible time to have a leadership election.
“A new leader won’t be in place by the January 21 statutory deadline which means the Government loses control of Brexit. This would be a terrible outcome.
“While it wasn’t perfect, I would have supported the withdrawal agreement, as a reasonable compromise that could have brought both sides together. I was pleased that the PM was going back to the EU for further reassurances on a time-limited backstop which was my main concern.
“There are many loud and vociferous voices from the most extreme sides of the debate, which give the impression that there is no reconciliation possible. However, the most considered and thoughtful messages I have received have been to get a compromise that works for both the 52 per cent and the 48 per cent and that is what I will continue to work towards for my constituency.”
James Cleverly, MP for Braintree, also said he would be voting in support of Theresa May.
He tweeted: “Clearly I’m disappointed that some in my party have triggered a vote of no confidence just as the PM is having a series of international meetings to deliver Brexit. I will, of course, be voting in support of Theresa May.”
