Teachers at Great Dunmow Primary School received pies in their faces on Red Nose Day if their jokes were judged ‘not up to scratch’.

The school, which raised about £400 for Comic Relief, held its first Red Nose Awards on Friday, where teachers competed in a joke-off.

Head teacher Kevin Watts said: “We wanted to combine our usual celebration assembly with Comic Relief. To coincide with Red Nose Day we wanted to do something that recognised those pupils who always make us smile, are positive, and have a caring nature. The recipients of the Red Nose Awards were the lucky ones who could pie their teacher in the face.”

Over at Dunmow St Mary’s Primary School, pupils also embraced the colour red and the school raised £489.

A school spokesman said: “We talked to the children about all the worthy causes that the money raised supports. Students also participated in a ‘red fact’ quiz.”
