A PUB will soon hear if it has won a UK competition. The Axe and Compasses at Arkesden has already received the Morning Advertiser's award for the Best Food pub in the Anglia region and will hear on February 7 whether it has won the national award in the category at a ceremony in London.The Advertiser is the pub trade's newspaper and the British isles is divided up into different geographical areas based on the TV regions so the awards can be made.The winners in each region go on to the national competition.Licensee Themis Christou, who runs the Axe with wife Diane, praised the work of the four chefs who work at the pub, as well as his three sons Paul, Michael and David."I am very happy to have won the regional award, and I would be even happier if we won the British Best Food pub category."Mr Christou's specialities include dishes from Europe and England.Last year the pub received the Good Pub Guide's Essex Dining Pub of the Year award, while in 2004 the Axe was named the Greene King Food Specialist Pub of the Year beating 1,500 pubs. Pubs can enter the Advertiser competition in a range of categories, including Best Newcomer and Most Entertaining pub.
