ONE of Dunmow's most well-known figures was remembered during a tree dedication service in his memory.

Alf Williams, who died on July 27 last year, was the landlord of the Boars Head for 23 years before retiring eight years ago.

He was also a mason and well-known for his charity work including being one of the instigators of the community minibus in the late 1970s - a service that still runs today.

His widow, Jean Williams, said: "Alf was well known around the town and much loved. He loved nature and I like to think he would have liked having a tree dedicated to his memory."

More than 20 people gathered at St Mary's Church on Friday for the ceremony, which took place the day before what would have been the couple's 45th wedding anniversary.

On the advice of town clerk Owen Wilson, Mrs Williams chose a Holm Oak because it fitted in with the churchyard surroundings.

"I originally thought about a bench but Mr Wilson suggested the tree and I thought it was such a good idea. It gives me somewhere go and also something for the children and grandchildren to remember him by.
