Torrential rain ensured that the British theme at Great Dunmow Primary School’s summer fayre rang true – but it failed to dampen spirits as visitors helped to raise £4,000 for the school.

The annual event, held on June 7, was threatened when bad weather was predicted for the whole afternoon but, by some miracle, not only did it stay dry after an 11am drenching, there were blue skies and sunshine for most of the day.

Families left the comfort of their homes to attend the fayre and enjoyed the fun and games, including smash-a-plate, coconut shy and hook-a-duck, on offer.

They were entertained by the school’s newly formed gym and country dancing teams, family races, and the Thaxted Morris Dancers. PA Woods provided Rolls Royce’s to admire and the event’s main sponsor, Daniel Brewer, went along with a balloon filled car.

Keen bakers also had their delicious cakes judged by BakeWELL for the school’s bake off.

Teacher Mel Casey said: “It was a fabulous afternoon, with a relaxed and friendly feel.

“It was well supported by families and community groups and we raised £4,000 just to pop a cherry on the top.

“It was hard work but worthwhile.”
