Dunmow-Dourdan Twinning Association held its fourth ‘Caledonian’ evening last Saturday – on Burns night.

Once again the event, at the Dunmow Day Centre, was a sell-out with around 70 people enjoying traditional fare for the occasion – haggis with clapshot (neeps and tatties) followed by a wide variety of delightful desserts (including Athole Brose) and Scottish cheese.

Revellers were treated to an in-depth talk about the distilleries on the isle of Islay which included three tastings of specialist whiskies and was led by Orkney-born Willie Fraser, a committee member of the association, magnificently attired in full Highland regalia.

To the haunting skirl of the bagpipes, the ‘Chieftain of the Pudding Race’ (the haggis) was traditionally presented and addressed by piper Tom Gardener – also in full Highland dress.

Guests were also entertained by talented magician Fred Mannings, and the evening ended with a raffle and live music from Ian Cremer and Stan Palmer.

David Barron, chairman of the association, said: “What a successful evening. On behalf of the Twinning Association I would like to express our thanks to Willie Fraser, his family and team of helpers who worked so hard to make this event so enjoyable.

“The phrase ‘this has been the best so far’ was also expressed by many people.”

The next twinning event will be the bi-annual trip from Dunmow to Dourdan, from May 1-4, where members will enjoy 3 nights’ hospitality from their French hosts plus a trip to Fontainebleau chateau and Barbizon artists’ village. Travel will be by coach from Dunmow.
