Students were celebrating across the county as the GCSE results were announced today (Thursday, August 24).

At Helena Romanes School in Great Dunmow 68, per cent of students received a standard pass in English and maths. With the new marking system, nine is the top grade, equivalent to A*. In six subjects at the school, there was a 100% score of A*-C and in six other subjects, 90% of students achieved A*-C.

The school’s English results were up on previous years with 85 per cent achieving the upper grades of 4-9 and 70 per cent achieving those grades in maths.

Simon Knight, headteacher said: “I would like to congratulate our students and staff on these outstanding results. More and more are achieving the highest levels of attainment.”

At Bishop’s Stortford College 70% of grades were A* or A and 99.4% were A*-C.

In the new maths GCSE, 94% of pupils gained at least grade 5 or higher and 8% achieved the top grade 9 (well above the national average of 3.5%).

Nearly one third of the 114 strong year group gained the magic Ten Club Tie for pupils achieving A* or A in 10 or more subjects. In both drama and music, all pupils gained A* or A and in both English Language IGCSE and Religious Studies GCSE, 89% of all grades were either A* or A, results which the college headmaster, Jeremy Gladwin called “Simply outstanding”.

Seven pupils gained 10 A* grades: Wendy Cowen, Luke Eddershaw, Shreeya Khetani, Nena Nurbhai, Grace Reed and Ella Stephens.

At Felsted School, Felsted’s top performer was Shola Akindayini who gained 10 A*s and two As. Shola, a day pupil from Braintree, plans to study medicine and take A Levels in maths, biology, chemistry and Latin.

Other high achievers were Chloe Green and Peter Hipkin, who gained nine A*s and two A grades. Chloe who also wants to study medicine will join Shola taking the same A Levels.

Peter Hipkin, from Flitch Green, gained a Felsted record in his Latin result; achieving a perfect 400 out of 400 UMS score. Peter aims to study history, economics and Spanish at A Level.

James Austin, from Flitch Green, gained 8 A*s, one A and one B grade. He will take A levels in economics, government and politics, French and maths.

Matt Hudson-Lund achieved a clean sweep of A grades (seven A*s, and three As). His A levels will be in maths, further maths, physics and geography. Barnaby Stoner, from Felsted, achieved seven A*s, three As and one B grade. He will study maths, economics and geography at A level. Bertie Webster secured seven A*s, three As and one B to study maths, further maths, physics and design technology at A Level. Siosi Tameifuna, gained six A*s, four As and one B grade. Both Siosi and Shola studied Greek GCSE off timetable, securing an additional A* grade each for their academic portfolios.

George Harvey, from Felsted, bagged five A*s, four As and one B grade with plans to take maths, physics, chemistry and design technology at A Level. Amber Aitken, from Flitch Green, gained five A*s, three As and a B grade. She plans to take the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Felsted, majoring in economics, Spanish and sports science and maths, French and English at standard level.

Harry Sturge, a sports scholar from High Easter, gained four A*s, five As and one B grade. Bram Emsley, from South Woodford, achieved four A*s and four As.

Silas Turner-Jones, from Felsted, gained three A*s, seven As and one B grade.
