An afternoon talk on Saturday, January 27 about the dangers the Cold War brought to East Anglia will launch a new display at Braintree Museum.
Ross Stewart, curator of the Wethersfield Airfield Museum will discuss military activity at the airfield after the Second World War.
Winston Churchill said in February 1951: “We must not forget that by creating the American atomic base in East Anglia, we have made ourselves the target, and perhaps the bull’s eye of a Soviet attack.”
East Anglia hosted the launch pads for the West’s first nuclear ballistic missiles. Nuclear bombs were stored secretly, under armed guard on the Norfolk/Suffolk border at Barnham. The UK’s early nuclear weapons was tested at Aldermaston. East Anglian skies were scanned for Soviet intruders.
