A RALLYING call has been made to “save the Saffron Walden constituency name” as the Boundary Commission consults on tweaking areas in which people vote during general elections.
Changes are being proposed that would see MP Sir Alan Haselhurst no longer representing Saffron Walden in Parliament but ‘North West Essex’ instead.
Sir Alan has said that changing the constituency name is “totally unacceptable” and is expected to mount a campaign to keep it intact.
Performing one of his many duties in the town itself, by helping to unveil new floodlights at the Grove Tennis Club (see back page), he said: “The Saffron Walden constituency has a lot of historical value and has always been a very important area.
“The boundary changes will be more sensible from a shape and convenience point of view – but we want to keep the name.
“I would encourage anyone that agrees with me to write to the commission and to me and I will be taking the issue forward.”
The Boundary Commission is consulting on the changes, which also include moving Great Dunmow into an area with Billericay and West Chelmsford, up until December. A final decision will then be made.
