Two years after raising £28,000 for charity by hiking to the North Pole, a High Roding man is to take his latest crazy feat of endurance – 13 marathons back-to-back from Paris to London.
Dave Sissens, 40, of The Street, has been raising money for Children with Cancer UK, which funds research into cures for childhood cancer, since he took up marathon running in 2002.
In May 2012 he was part of a five-man party that braved temperatures of -40°C to walk 150km over 10 days from Camp Barneo in the Arctic Circle to the North Pole. It was a challenge the 40-year-old spent over a year training for and culminated in him raising a huge amount of money for charity.
Looking around for his latest challenge, Dave finally found something he felt could “raise the bar” even further.
“It was tough coming up with something to do that would better the trek to the North Pole,” Dave told the Broadcast, “but after investing a little time in researching what I would like to do and I discovered that no one has ever run mile-for-mile from Paris to London.

“Plenty have covered the distance but in terms of running every mile, no one has covered the 20-plus miles that include the ferry-crossing.”
Dave’s challenge will see him run the Paris Marathon in April 2015 before continuing on his journey back to the UK where, aboard a P&O ferry, he will cover the distance of the Channel on a treadmill specially set up in the car park on board the vessel.

He will finish up by running the London Marathon just under two weeks after completing the Paris equivalent.
Asked why he had been inspired to choose such an intense challenge, Dave replied: “Whilst a terrific opportunity to raise money for a fantastic charity, I believe and hope to prove that everybody can do anything they wish, they just need to decide what it is and set their mind and efforts on it!”
He added: “I am aiming to raise upwards of £50,000 and I know I can do it. I was recently invited to Great Ormond Street to see the cancer labs and be shown where the money was spent.
“Children with Cancer not only provide care for the suffering kids, but they also fund some fantastically innovative projects which really are making great in-roads into success rate of stopping the disease. That’s what matters. That’s what I think about and that’s what gets me through these things. Every life counts.”
