A 21-year-old man from Chelmsford has been charged with possessing a Class A drug.

Police were called at about 1am yesterday, April 9, to the Essex Cricketers pub, Moulsham Street, Notley, by a member of the public who reported a man acting suspiciously outside.

Officers arrived but the man had made off so they searched the area. Special Constable Anthony Varrier found the man outside Tesco, in the Square, in possession of a controlled substance and arrested him on suspicion of drug offences. The man, a factory worker, was taken to Braintree police station and questioned. He was charged just after 10am yesterday and will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on April 27.

Pc Paul Clarke, from Braintree police station, said: “Drug offences will not be tolerated in our community and anyone found using or dealing drugs should expect to spend time in our custody.

“This is a great example of the work that our Special Constabulary regularly get stuck into. Their presence is an excellent support to both us and the community.”
